TIS/OHSAS
18001 Occupational H&S Management Systems
Industry
has long recognized that “risk” in all it’s forms
needs to be managed in a systematic and sustainable
manner. Following the ‘models’ of ISO 9001 for Quality
and ISO 14001 for Environment there a British Standard’s
Institute approach for Occupational Health and Safety
Management Systems has been developed – OHSAS 18001
– and this approach has now been adopted by the Thai
Standard’s Institute with the issue of TIS 18001.
This standard is almost identical to the ISO 14001 Environmental
Management Standard and adopts the same methodology
and general structure, but is directed at work-place
health and safety rather than environment.
Whilst the standard’s requirements can be adopted
and implemented as a ‘stand-alone’ Management
System approach – and many companies have done
this - any company with ISO 14001 in place will
find it relatively easy to integrate TIS/OHSAS
18001 within an ISO 14001 system. The benefits
in terms of safety improvement and control should
also mirror the success of ISO14001 for those
who implement its requirements.
The TIS/OHSAS 18001 certification approach exactly
replicates the approach defined for ISO 14001 (see
The Process of Auditing)
